Websites for sale

Recently I???‚¬?„?ve decided to put a few of my more valuable websites up for sale. Well 7 to be exact???‚¬?¦ there???‚¬?„?s a few that I need to just let go of (since they have no real value as far as name and no PR either). And about 3 others that I would gladly sell, I just need to get some PR on them and/or finish the development process. There???‚¬?„?s a few of my sites that I will be retaining no matter what, those being this site, Archmaille Designs, Cody Sortore, KC LAN Party, and a few others just for the page rank if nothing else. I???‚¬?„?m taking a little bit of a ???‚¬?“career???‚¬?? shift here though and any sites that I do keep will be primarily for the continual income from various outlets such as P3, Yahoo! Advertising, Jewelry Sales, or whatever sentimental value a site may hold for me. The sites I???‚¬?„?m selling are all PR2 or higher, one PR4 as well for those interested I can give you a list.

Anyways, it has been a fairly fun run as a website developer???‚¬?¦ it???‚¬?„?s time to start moving on and doing something a little more meaningful. I???‚¬?„?m going into teaching, probably high school level, and even that is going to be a few years since I want to time it to start when Connor starts school. I???‚¬?„?m thinking science, or history???‚¬?¦ obviously the two subjects that I know most about and have a passion for. I???‚¬?„?d say computer science???‚¬?¦ but I???‚¬?„?m just a hardware geek when it comes to that I don???‚¬?„?t get into much other than PHP programing and a little bit of light design work.

My web development progress… or lack there of :-P

This post is more geared towards newbs in the field like myself, and will go over both advantages I’ve found and disadvantages. First off lets start by saying that my progress in the website development world has been VERY slow and everything has been self taught. I started out in 7th grade on NeoPets.com where I learned about “NeoHTML” which wasn’t actually HTML at all it was CSS that you used so that you could format your page. Then I actually started to use HTML when I got Archmaille.com which originally was where I tried selling my sterling silver jewelry (if you don’t believe me check out Way Back Machine) I hand coded the site at first, later on some webmaster forums I learned how to combine my knowledge of CSS and HTML to create prettier pages. I finally started to dable in PHP when I got kclanparty.org where I first had PHPNuke installed. Didn’t do much more than the template, and a few custom add ons… but it helped me to learn the interaction of PHP and HTML. Later on I learned of the beauties that come with Wordpress soon abandoning PHPNuke. I mean the only feature of Nuke I really used was the blog so why bother with all that clutter, and growing insecurities?

At this point not only my knowledge of the difference between good code, and the interactions of the different foundational languages was growing, but so was my portfolio of websites. Moving into the upper 20’s the list of domains I owned seemed to be growing month by month. Now with several Wordpress websites, the experience with PHPNuke, (also some PHPBB), and ArchmailleDesigns.com where my jewelry store moved with a custom PHP shopping cart… it was about time that I actually learned how to code a website in PHP from the ground up.

I went out and purchased several books on PHP and MySQL because what I wanted to do you really can’t have one without the other. After several chapters of these books I wasn’t really getting to anything terribly interesting to me. I was learning names of things that I’ve been using for a long time, which is helpful to a point, but not as much as you might think. I could now search for solutions when I had problems which was nice, but I wasn’t having many problems with the few things I knew.

Later when I was working on the security team with MTV protecting their websites I learned of the great world of PHP frameworks. Or rather MVC frameworks in general. I tried many of them but really attached myself to CakePHP since the others were basically worthless as you still had to write 100% of the code how is that quicker? With cake you’ve got the beautiful Bake function where you can bake up a simple CRUD (Create Read Update Delete) website in a matter of minutes (assuming you already have the database ready) What CakePHP really taught me was the importance of good Database Structure, hell it taught me database structure all together, but since it was writing 90% of the code for me and I was once again editing it… needless to say I’ve still not learned any sort of real code.

Which brings me to the downsides of PHP frameworks I still don’t know what I’m doing! I built PetitionsForChange.com in less than 2 weeks! It really is amazing how quickly you can build a website with a framework… but now I am starting to build websites more and more complex, each new project has new complexities that come with it. Now that I’ve become more comfortable with CakePHP it is once again time to move out on my own and start to learn just PHP by itself. I’ve actually learned MySQL very well which I didn’t know before, so I feel more confident to go out and take on the task of building a website in straight out PHP.

Web Hosting Geeks

I’ve stressed to my readers time in and time out on all of my blogs the importance of when you decide to go online to DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Whether you’re purchasing a new computer, computer parts, a car, or whatever you should research that product, research the company, research their customer support. I tell the same thing to all the people out there looking to go online with their business. I tell them that when you’re looking for web site hosting look up the company, look up what they stand for and how they do business. Not doing so is just asking for trouble. I know when I first moved my business online I was naive and just looked for a manageable price on everything. Then turns out the company that I went with was impossible to get a hold of, their server wouldn’t allow me to upload via FTP, and .htaccess files were not allowed so I couldn’t run the types of sites that I wanted… needless to say I didn’t stick with that company for very long (I won’t say who it is because from what I’ve heard they’ve changed since, but I still hold a grudge so will never return to them. It’s one of the mega super hosting companies)

Thanksgiving Dinner

Gotta love this time of year. Thanksgiving is a time for gathering, and getting a good full meal! Rose and I have been preparing the Thanksgiving dinner for at my mothers house for tonight… last Sunday we had a dinner at my dads house, tomorrow we get one at her parents house, and then Sunday we get another one at her Grandmothers house. So we can officially say here in a couple of weeks I’ll be all turkied out! But at least I get a few good Thanksgiving dinners! It does suck that it puts me behind with work… I always get inspired to do stuff when I have no time… why is that? Oh well, I’ve got some very good things in the works for ArchmailleDesigns.com which starts with a new shopping cart. One that I can add downloadable items to. Then creating some PDF files with jewelry care tips, others with chainmail creation patterns and stuff… and I’ll take over the search engines and just charge anywhere from 0.50¢ to $5 per downloaded item depending upon what it is. That should pick up business a little bit, people will be more willing to pay a couple bucks for useful information, rather than spending the money to buy the items… then when they get frustrated at not making stuff the same as what I sell they can come back and purchase from me once again :-P

ZOMG!! It’s true!

I have recently discovered that my cat is trying to kill me… I mean, I always knew he was evil, but kill me? Naw, he just wants attention right? Maybe he’s not really trying to kill me, he just thinks that’s how he’s supposed to play? Not according to this quiz!

Is your cat plotting to kill you?

There is an 85% chance that my cat is plotting to kill me! Don’t be fooled hoomans take the five minutes to fill out this quiz and discover if you’re about to be murdered… I’m glad that I did now I can be prepared for when the moment strikes!

Watch out! They bite!

Earlier last week there were reports out of Beijing of a students hospitalization because of a Panda biting incident. Apparently the college student from Southern China just needed a hug. While visiting the zoo in Beijing the unnamed student jumped the six and a half foot tall fence surrounding the Panda habitat to hug one of the fluffy cuddly creatures only to find that they’re not so cuddly after all. The panda bit the student repeatedly on the arms and legs reports a zoo employee.

The official Xinhua News Agency reports the hospitalized student later said the panda was so cute and cuddly he never expected to be bitten. Guess he’ll think twice next time before jumping into a penned up animals home. Domesticated as they may be they’re still animals, and uh… well they still bite.

Surprisingly enough this is not the first time these Panda’s have struck fear into the hearts of the Beijing populous. Not surprising because pandas look so cute and cuddly I’d never suspect them of biting anyone. Pandas may look docile but can be vicious when they feel threatened. But surprising because this is not the second, but third time these pandas have bitten visiting tourists. The first attack was… well more of an attack from a drunken tourist who stumbled into the Pandas enclosure, after being bitten by the Panda the man reportedly bit back. The same Panda Gu Gu later in 2007 mauled a 15 year old boy who climbed the 1.4 meter (approx four and a half foot) tall fence. The fence had been raised to six and a half feet, but that still didn’t stop this college student who just wanted a hug and was viciously bitten on the arms and legs on November 22, 2008. The panda in this incident was named Yang Yang… and was not as ferocious with his attacks as Gu Gu was. I think we can all learn a lesson here though, no matter how cute, fuzzy, and warm a panda may appear to be… don’t look to them for a hug. You might pick something less vicious than a panda bear such as a Bengal Tiger… At least the death would be a quicker one than being gnawed upon by a vegetarian bear. On second thought, if you’re really that depressed go see someone for counseling, get a dog, or sign up for a dating site :-P Wild animals don’t tend to be the best option for your affectionate needs.

Bloodlines

I just finished an awesome session of watching Underworld! Well Underworld and Underworld Evolutions :-D really one of the best vampire/werewolf movie series ever! The end of evolutions really makes me think that one day they???‚¬?„?ll make a sequel. If they don???‚¬?„?t that???‚¬?„?s fine too, it???‚¬?„?s still a great movie series, but I???‚¬?„?d like to see a sequel at some point in time.

Watching it got me uber pumped about internet marketing though???‚¬?¦ is that strange? I was thinking about how linking and link quality are so very much like the bloodlines in Underworld. My first site was this one Archmaille.com, it???‚¬?„?s been dormant, and gone under a lot of changes, but the strength of it is still unmatched. kclanparty.org is my next site, and it too even though it has been removed from Google for pagerank, it is still amazingly powerful. The combination of the two with MagpieRSS has just been amazing though! I can rank and get my pages listed with Google dang near instantly! The power flows down from one site to the next, and as they get older they just get more powerful. Taking the bloodline from one old site, and transfusing it with a newer one only makes the two sites so much more than they ever could be alone???‚¬?¦ and it is that which I am finally able to do! With the combination of CodySortore.com, Archmaille.com, kclanparty.org, ArchmailleDesigns.com, and ApplyMyWay.com by the end of next year I???‚¬?„?ll be making at least $6k a month from simple advertisements, and another $5k a month or so from affiliate marketing and clickbank! Oh, the possibilities are growing, and the future looks beautiful.

Right now I’m stealing the blood lines of about 20 very powerful sites (or families if you will). Using places such as Squidoo, Xanga, and Digg to piece together my measly existence. That existence grows with every page I add to their networks and link back to myself. Very slowly I inch my way to the top, soon with the development of ApplyMyWay.com I’ll be able to create my own family so powerful that I’ll dominate all of my key niches. Blogging with CodySortore.com, gaming and hardware review with Archmaille.com, Technology news with KCLANParty.org, jewelry with ArchmailleDesigns.com, and social networking or quizzes with ApplyMyWay.com with the five sites, each with its own respective niche they’ll grow and thrive together pulling in a variety of visitors to cover seasonal, and non-seasonal peak times for making money online.

CakePHP URLs

gah! I’m going nuts over here… I talked about my no log in admin panel, which should work out, if only I could get the URLs to work properly. What I need is for the URLs to look something like http://www.applymyway.com/applications/edit/100/secretid/ and without that secret ID in the URL nothing will happen. All of my attempts at this have failed though… either it shows the page no matter what is there for the secret ID or instead of saving an edited version of the application at hand…

So it’s gonna be back to the drawing board here soon if this doesn’t get figured out.

Lolvertising

I got another idea earlier today about how to advertise with the launch of ApplyMyWay.com I still want to do the $200 PRWeb Press Release with a $100 upgrade to the podcast site.?‚?  Then I’ve got $100 sitting in my P3 advertising account, I’d like to bump that up by another $200 but am not exactly sure if that will happen.?‚?  Then, another idea occured to me… What if I advertised on Icanhascheezburger.com??‚?  It’s actually WAY too much for me to advertise on there… I checked, at $950 a week for the cheap ads… I think not.?‚?  What I can do though is advertise on graphjam.com where I can get one week for $35, or two for $60.?‚?  Mix that in with the rest of the advertising campaign and I’m thinking win.?‚?  Two weeks on graphjam has an estimated ad impressions of 1.7 million so it should turn around about 1,700 clicks or so I believe, half of which will either create an application or click other ads on my site.?‚?  So I’d say 300 new apps, and 400 clicks on ads as an hypothesis.

I’d really like to advertise on ihasahotdog.com though… it’s $150?‚?  for one week… so if I can get some backing from Jordan it just MIGHT be possible to do just that.?‚?  PRweb, ihasahotdog, graphjam, and p3.

Of course I still have to finish building the site!?‚?  That is my first task… finish the site, and then go nuts on advertising it to the world.

Top Web Hosting

You guys all know that I’ve reviewed a LOT of web hosting companies in my day… a lot of which can be found on my gaming blog Archmaille.com including this review because I have a tons of respect for TopWebHostingReviews.org unlike many other web host “review” sites that are simply up to push affiliate links TopWebHostingReviews.org really has experience with the companies that they review. It is honestly one of the best put together Top Web Hosting websites that I have ever seen!

I see a lot of websites that try to review hosting companies that just put the top four or five companies that it’s easy to get an affiliate link to. But they don’t actually review anything. They tell how much bandwidth you get for $4.95 a month, they list all the “specs” that you can see on the hosting sites, but they don’t actually review the experience with these companies. This is a huge deal for me since I rent a dedicated server and run 24 of my own websites. I spent a lot of time reading review sites and scrounging the internet for the information I needed, running into more phony review sites than you could care to see. You’ll get the straight answer from TopWebHostingReview.org though… and I respect that.

The owner of TopWebHostingReview.org has reviewed a lot of credible hosting companies such as HostMonster, BlueHost, and FastDomain. Not just the every day crap hosting companies that everybody and their mother reviews such as Yahoo!
